Carbon Marketing – Clean Development Mechanism

November 6, 2009 – Friday, was special for those students who attended the seminar by Mr. Rahul Kumar Kandoi – A marketing professional from Emergent Ventures.

The agenda of the seminar was to brief the students about the carbon industry and its relevance in a time where global warming and climate change are becoming serious threats to environment sustainability. And, an hour and fifteen minutes of discussions on global warming – it’s repercussions and international response to the phenomenon later, the students left the room an enthralled lot.

We were enlightened about the benefits of solar energy, how it is the next big thing (Note: Gujarat government has proposed a 5000 MW solar energy plant that will assist in electricity supply to Madhya Pradesh also). Solar energy helps reduce the impact of the harmful greenhouse gases (GHG) on the natural balance, something that is desperately needed (how many of us noticed the ‘blink and you miss’ winter in Delhi last season, or the depleted monsoon rains)

Truly, solar energy is untapped potential. So where does carbon marketing come in? The United Nations has established a regulatory body for stabilizing GHG emissions, the    (UNFCCC). According to its policy, the participating countries are given emission reduction targets. Each country is legally bound to reduce emission by a calculated percentage.

According to the council, developing nations like India and China can reduce emissions by much more than what developed nations can. The reason being, that developing countries have cheap labor availability. At present, 192 countries are affiliated to this program.

To conclude, you don’t necessarily have to be convinced about all the hoopla surrounding global warming.
But, just to give you some food for thought… the average global surface temperature has been rising steadily over time. The rise in the average global sea level and melting of ice in the northern hemisphere are also evidence for the same. 30 % of the coasts have been flooded and now reside under water.

Global warming is a reality. We need to step up our control mechanisms. So do what you can, as much as you can, be a hero. As Gandhiji said, “be the change you want to see.”
